When it comes to process automation, fieldbus systems guarantee optimum levels of reliability and availability. For the typical fault scenarios that arise in day-to-day operation, Pepperl+Fuchs has developed a new generation of components capable of performing diagnostics. These components allow a seamless, transparent fieldbus infrastructure to be put in place – without the need for additional engineering work.

With the new Advanced Diagnostic Gateway (ADG), a gap that previously existed in monitoring fieldbus infrastructure has now been closed. After all, it makes sense to monitor the control cabinet and ambient conditions on a continuous basis to ensure maximum system availability. However, in the case of process control systems equipped with fieldbus technology, only the bus connections and power supply are located in the control room cabinet. There are no signal inputs or outputs.

Now, for the first time, the innovative gateway from Pepperl+Fuchs features digital inputs that can also be used as pulse counters or for measuring frequency. It is also possible to connect analog sensors. An air humidity sensor and two power relays for controlling air-conditioning units are integrated in the system. These components can be put to flexible use monitoring the control cabinet and the surrounding area.


Integration of control technology via FOUNDATION Fieldbus H1

In addition to integration via Ethernet and a fieldbus diagnostic server, the new ADG also provides the option of integration via FOUNDATION Fieldbus H1. In this scenario, the gateway acts as an FF-H1 node and communicates the data from up to 16 diagnostic modules/64 segments using a single fieldbus address. Users have the choice between integration via device description (DD) or FDT/DTM.

In addition to status messages in line with NE 107, details including the expert system report can be displayed directly on the system. Even the commissioning wizard, a function to provide an automated process for checking all segment measurements and parameters, can be retrieved via FF-H1. At the same time, Ethernet can be used for the oscilloscope or for extensive historical measurements for which the volume of data is simply too large. The software automatically searches for and locates the Ethernet connection without the need for specific configuration tasks.


Checks in advance, without using control technology

It is often useful or desirable to check the physical layer immediately after installation when the control technology is still unavailable. To enable these checks, a special form of FF-H1 communication via Ethernet is used. A driver makes it possible to set up FF-H1 communication directly at the gateway, using a laptop.

Once this communication has been set up, it is then possible to check the segment quality and communication with all connected devices. All settings can then be adopted in the control technology at a later point via FF-H1. For reports generated during the commissioning process, an import/export function is provided.

The ADG features new, intelligent diagnostic features such as advanced short-circuit protection, lightning protection complete with a self-monitoring function, and leakage sensors that register the smallest changes in humidity. All of these new components are suitable for use with FOUNDATION Fieldbus H1.
